INTRODUCTION

Situated in eastern Caribbean Sea, on the boundary to Atlantic Ocean lies the island of Saint Lucia which is a part of Lesser Antilles. Saint Lucia is situated to the north of Saint Vincent and Grenadine islands to the northwest of Barbados and to the south of Martinique. Named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse, the island is one of the windward islands. Europeans first visited the island of Saint Lucia around 1500 and France was the first nation to colonise the island in 1660 by signing a treaty with the native Caribs. From 1663 to 1667 the British took over the island waging a war against France, fighting fourteen times over the island, finally winning her from France in 1814. A representative government was established around 1924 followed by the commencement of universal suffrage from 1953 and the island was a member of the Federation of the West Indies between 1958 and 1962. Saint Lucia finally became an independant state of Commonwealth of Nations on the 22nd of February 1979. This day is celebrated every year with a public holiday.
The island of Saint Lucia is also known as ”Helen of West Indies” beacause her shift between British and French controls was so frequent that it resembled to the fate of the mythical Helen of Troy.

Diverse festive events mark the year in St. Lucia with Carnival and Calypso celebrations, to weekly street parties and world class tennis tournaments. Saint Lucia Jazz Festival is the best place to be at, for music lovers. Comprising of four days from the 8th of May to the 11th of May, this festival sees some of world's best performers on the island.

History

During Spain's early investigation of the Carribbean, Europeans first set foot on the island either in 1492 or 1502. The French, English and the Dutch attempted to base their trading outposts on the island in the 17th century but was fiercely opposed by the native Caribs.
